PROMASTER’s altimeter can measure from minus 300 metres to 10,000 metres above sea level—higher than any mountain on Earth! Once activated, the altimeter continuously measures your altitude for five minutes, then provides automatic readings every three
minutes over the next 12 hours, freeing climbers to focus on climbing without the need to perform any fiddly manual operations.
With all the information displayed in analogue rather than digital format, there is no need to switch away
from the all-important time display to check altitude or orientation.
When you’re exposed to a raging wind on the summit of a mountain, you can experience unimaginable levels of cold. But however severe the conditions, climbers need access to time and altitude information.
For PROMASTER, we recreated an ultra-cold
environment in which to conduct a barrage of verification tests. We successfully demonstrated that the watch, altimeter and compass all continue working even at minus 20°C. This is a professional sports watch you can rely even in harsh, cold regions.
In 1985 we introduced the world’s first diver’s watch with a depth meter using an electronic sensor. The PROMASTER depth meter has only continued to evolve since. The water pressure sensor (at the 3 o’clock position on the case) only needs to be
in contact with water for two seconds before it automatically starts measuring water depth to a maximum of 70 metres.
The depth meter starts from 3 o’clock (i.e. 3 o’clock = 0 metres) and gradually “descends” from there. Depth, which is indicated
on the markers, rises in increments of ± 1 metre in the more common 0 to 40 metre range, then changes to increments of ± 2 metres for the less common 40 to 70 metre range, making for excellent readability. (You also get to enjoy the sight of the
hands moving dynamically during your dive.) It is also possible to display the time, while displaying current depth and maximum depth. By eliminating the hassle of switching between modes, we enable divers to have both hands free at all times during
dives.
Eco-Drive features an ultra-low-power microcomputer that controls the depth meter and the altimeter. Activate either of them and the microcomputer analyses the information from the sensor, converts it into depth or altitude data, then rotates the hands to communicate the relevant information to the user. In addition, the microcomputer, controls the watch and checks the battery voltage, the amount of energy being generated, and the temperature. While we deliberately use a CPU with a low clock speed, the real reason it can perform so many processes simultaneously is because of the expertise CITIZEN has developed in reducing Eco-Drive’s power consumption over the years.

Satellite Wave GPS receives position data and a time signal from orbiting GPS satellites which it uses to automatically adjust the time and date. When receiving only a time signal, Satellite Wave GPS requires a minimum of 3 seconds to get the correct time—the fastest reception time in the world.* As long as there is open sky above your head, wherever you are on Earth, Satellite Wave GPS will keep telling the precise time. * As of February 2017, for a multifunctional light-powered GPS satellite-synchronised watch, according to research by Citizen Watch Co., Ltd.
Just pull out the crown and point the second hand at one of the cities on the bezel to display the time and date there instantly. The watch simultaneously displays two preset times, ‘home time’ and ‘local time,’ which you can switch between with an intuitive one-step operation.
The high-performance motor has the capacity to move the hands extremely rapidly both clockwise and anti-clockwise. The sheer speed at which users can switch between ‘local time’ and ‘home time,’ as well as other time zones, makes stress a thing of the past.
Light, kind to the skin and resistant to rust, titanium has excellent natural properties. At the same time, though, its softness and viscosity make it very hard to process. Through processing technologies developed over decades, CITIZEN can create beautiful mirror finishes and clean and sharp edges. And by applying our proprietary surface-hardening technology, Duratect, we created Super Titanium™, a material over five times harder than stainless steel. Super Titanium™ resists nicks and scratches even in the harsh environments experienced by divers and climbers. Uniquely for PROMASTER, we developed models that combine two technologies—Duratect MRK and Duratect DLC—for our toughest exteriors yet.
Duratect MRK is a technology that maintains titanium’s original properties of lightness and rust-resistance while hardening the surface of the material itself (as opposed to applying a coating to it). Two gases are injected into a special vacuum furnace and heat treatment applied to produce a hard layer about 20 to 30 microns thick on the surface of the titanium. Resistance to nicks is increased because the surface of the titanium material itself is made harder. Whether you’re hefting compressed air tanks out at sea or clambering up rocky mountain summits, Super Titanium™ will protect your watch from all the shocks that harsh environments bring.
Duratect DLC is a cold plasma technology. It involves passing an electric current through hydrogen and carbon gases to diffuse an amorphous carbon coating onto the surface of the titanium. DLC is an acronym for ‘diamond-like carbon.’ The DLC coating
has an amorphous structure containing carbon and hydrogen (like a diamond) and lacking any grain boundaries. As a result, it’s extremely hard, smooth and scratch-resistant.
CITIZEN’s Duratect DLC also has a higher level of adhesiveness than
standard DLC technologies—something that makes for enhanced levels of toughness.
Whether you’re at sea, on land or up in the sky, any obstacle-rich environment comes with the risk of bumping your PROMASTER and knocking the hands out of place. CITIZEN developed its proprietary shock counteraction function to address that problem.
The instant your watch experiences a shock or strong vibration, an electrical signal is sent to the motor, momentarily locking the rotor to prevent the hands from moving out of place. The whole operation takes just one-thousandth of a second, meaning
that the watch has prevented any deviation and resumed telling the right time before you’ve even noticed the impact!
At CITIZEN, we recognise that the basic function of a watch is above all to always display the correct time. That’s why we
make repeated tests using hammers and sophisticated measuring devices to verify this particular function. (We have developed a unique mechanism to make sure the function only activated when the shock passes a certain threshold.) A professional
sports watch must display the correct time regardless of extreme conditions. That’s why the shock counteraction function is so valuable.
This function goes into action in the unlikely event of the hands deviating from the correct time. It checks the position of the hands at regular intervals, and automatically returns the hands to the correct position in the event of any error. Combining this function with the shock counteraction function means that your watch maintains its accuracy even in environments where exposure to shocks and bumps is high.
PROMASTER’s photo-luminescent markings absorb light fast, stay bright for a long time and cover a generous proportion of the hands. Furthermore, we deep-sea tested different colours for the dial and hands to find the colour combination that offers the best possible underwater visibility. With this design, you can be confident that your watch is fully readable even in the ocean’s darkest depths.
A screwdown crown helps makes PROMASTER fully water resistant. Because the stem of the crown is threaded, it can be screwed tightly into place when not in use. Locking the crown doesn’t just mean better water resistance, it also guards against unintentional rotation.
We made the bezel of the PROMASTER unidirectional in line with the ISO standard for diving watches. This improves safety by eliminating the danger of a diver accidentally turning the bezel the wrong way during a dive. The Eco-Drive Professional Diver 1000m model is equipped with a bezel-locking mechanism.
Using a double-folding buckle means that hard-working professionals can concentrate on the task in hand without having to worry about their watch accidentally slipping off. It’s the most basic safety measure of all.
All PROMASTER watches are powered by light, a source of energy that is accessible anywhere on Earth. It is Eco-Drive, CITIZEN’s proprietary light-powered technology, that makes this possible. Eco-Drive generates energy to drive the watch even from
dim light and stores the surplus in a rechargeable cell. On a single full charge, it can run for up to six months in total darkness,* eliminating the need to replace or recharge batteries.
We have worked to reduce Eco-Drive’s energy consumption
so that sophisticated functions like the depth meter and altimeter can run alongside the core time-keeping function. Eco-Drive continues to evolve, opening up exciting new possibilities for PROMASTER.
*Some models run for less than six months.
