With CITIZEN’s proprietary light-powered technology Eco-Drive, light must pass through the dial to reach the solar cell beneath. That presents a challenge: How to achieve the right balance between light transmittance and aesthetic appeal. Using Tosa washi—one of Japan’s three great washi traditions—as a dial material is one of the solutions we have devised.
This new model features Unryushi (literally, “cloud-dragon paper”). Getting its name from the way the long swirling fibres evoke a dragon flying through clouds, Unryushi is one of the most difficult varieties of Tosa washi to make. The subtle hue of the DURATECT Sakura Pink case resonates beautifully with both the materiality of the Unryushi and the unique patterns created by the long golden fibres. The result is a watch at once serene and splendid, discreet yet dignified.

The papermaking process has multiple stages. One stage involves beating and separating the plant fibres in a vat full of water. When making Unryushi, it is at this point that golden fibres are added to impart a subtle note of luminosity to the washi. Every sheet is different according to how the golden threads are added. The delicate gleam of this unusual washi dial, which evokes a dragon disporting itself amongst the clouds, endows each piece in the limited edition with a beauty all its own.

Quality taken to an even higher level
As part of the drive to make its watches more sustainable, CITIZEN is working to source more of the leather it uses from tanneries approved by the Leather Working Group (LWG).* The crocodile leather of the band of this model comes from an LWG-certified tannery. The interplay between the intricate pattern of the Unryushi dial and the textured look of the high-quality leather further underlines the model’s unique character.

Leather Working Group (LWG) is an international not-for-profit organisation whose members include brands, tanneries and chemical suppliers. LWG evaluates the safety and environmental performance etc. of the leather manufacturing process and awards certification only to tanneries that pass its rigorous audits.
