A new form inspired by light
Eco-Drive has made countless technological breakthroughs, and improved sustainability in the watch market. After half a century, the development of Eco-Drive PHOTON, the Eco-Drive 50th Anniversary Limited Edition, represented an opportunity to tackle further new challenges.
A photon is a quantum of light. Taking the Double Slit Experiment—a legendary experiment that demonstrated light’s unusual properties—as its starting point, the form of Eco-Drive PHOTON has an intuitive beauty that is derived from a scientific concept. It is a model fit for Eco-Drive’s milestone 50th anniversary.

DESIGN
A direct expression of Eco-Drive’s function
Eco-Drive PHOTON rethinks Eco-Drive from first principles. Using a slitted metal dial rather than a normal light-transmittable dial makes it immediately clear that there is light passing through. The watch’s form is thus a pure expression of the function.
Ever-changing colours born of light interference
Structural colours are generated when microscopic structures reflect or interfere with light. A layer of structural colour film is inserted between the slitted dial and the solar cell. As a result, vivid structural colours which change depending on the viewing angle can be glimpsed through the dial slits.

Lower metal dial
Two slitted metal dials on top of one another create an interference fringe-like pattern. The further addition of a slitted dial cover results in a truly multilayered, three-dimensional structure. Form follows function in a watch with a truly unique personality.
