“What is the best way to power a watch?“
CITIZEN first posed this question in the 1970s. Our engineers went on to create Eco-Drive through a series of incremental improvements. A proprietary technology that uses only light to power watches, Eco-Drive eliminates the need for regular battery replacement and can be used for years on end. Meanwhile light is an inclusive resource to which everybody, everywhere has equal access.
A technology first
In 1996, in a first for a watchmaker, Eco-Drive obtained Eco Mark certification in Japan for contributing to sustainability by helping to reduce the volume of waste batteries. In 2014, Eco-Drive was awarded a Gold Prize at the Eco Mark Awards in Japan, another first in the watchmaking business.
Eco-Drive allows for a rich variety of beautiful designs and is capable of powering multiple functions, from altimeters and compasses to Bluetooth connections to smartphones. We want as many people as possible to use Eco-Drive. That’s why we’ve put the technology in a wide range of CITIZEN watches, from entry-level to high-end models.
