Are we following the principles of inclusive design?

A watch for the blind and visually impaired

A watch for everyone

“We want a better life for as many people as possible.” That philosophy explains why CITIZEN became the first Japanese watchmaker to develop watches for the blind and visually impaired in around 1960.

But what kind of watch do blind and visually impaired people actually want? It turns out they don’t just want a watch with the necessary functionality; they want an attractive watch that looks good by any objective standard. That is now the CITIZEN definition of a genuinely inclusive watch.

Choose a better world

We donate a proportion of the watches we create based on this approach to the blind and visually impaired people who assist us in the development process. CITIZEN has now spent decades making watches for the visually challenged, developing a succession of models that match the evolving needs of the times. Leveraging a century of watchmaking know-how, we work to keep prices down so that the largest possible number of people can benefit from our products. Our passion for making watches that everybody can use has a long history—and it continues to burn undimmed to this day.
